TREKKING IN YUNNAN
Yunnan Province is a continuation of the Tibetan plateau. In the west, a series of high mountain chains, collectively called the Hengduan Shan, run roughly northwest to southeast, then branch out in a fan shape. From west to east these high mountains are the Gaolilyong Shan, Nu Shan and the Yunling. In the eastern plateau region, the northeast to southwest ranges are Jiaozi, Wulian, Wumeng, Liangwang, Niushou and Liushao Shan. Approximately 30 mountain tops rise well above 2500 meters. Mount Kagebo, the peak of the Meiii Sriow Mountains and the highest point in the province, is in the northwest of the province, and soars 6740 meters above sea level.

The beautifully scenic routes across the northwestern plateau of Yunnan offer a visual experience like no other.  There is an active exploration featuring spectacular sights in remote Dali and Lijiang and up onto the Yunnan-Sichuan border, where the Daughters Kingdom hides.
Walk historic trails, visit villages of different minorities and journey to ancient sacred sites.
The region is traditionally occupied by the ancient Yi, Mosuo, Naxi, Tibetan and Bai ethnic groups.
The Mosuo people still keep a  bizarre custom-matriarchal society.

the Jinshajiang River, the Lancang River and Nujiang River run in parallel for over 400 kilometers presenting a grand spectacle. At one point only 66 kilometres lie between the three rivers with mountains, canyons, snow capped peaks offering a unique view. The Great Gorge of the Nujiang river along with primeval forests and the grasslands in Zhongdian are some of the most renowned scenic spots in the province. The Tibetan, Naxi and Lisu people who are the main inhabitants of the area, enjoy colorful traditions and customs.

The Yulong Snow Mountains Range stretches across Lijiang, Ninglang and Zhongdian counties in northwest Yunnan. It provides many scenic attractions over a total of 770 square kilometers. Along the snow capped Yulong Mountains, alpine azaleas grow in abundance. The Yangtze River flows through the area and makes the first of its many big turns here. It flows swiftly through the Tiger-leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge known in the world.

The Qomolangma Nature Preserve was established
on March 18, 1989
The preserve area includes the exceptional biological diversity of the pristine Kama Valley and the more barren high-altitude desert and vast arid grasslands of the Tibetan Plateau, which receive less than 300 millimeters of annual precipitation.
Culturally this is home of the Rongbuk Monastery, the world's highest monastery and year-round human settlement, and Milarepa's Cave. The approximately 70,000 Tibetan nomads and farmers living within the sparsely populated preserve continue to practice their historic mountain-culture traditions.
