The island’s European heritage goes back to the early 1800s, but Aboriginals first reached it about 40,000 years ago.
More than one third of Tasmania is reserved in a network of national parks and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
HOBART
Hobart had the most inauspicious of beginnings. Its sole raison d'etre was to keep the French out of Australia. Fearful that the French might try to establish a colony on the island Governor Philip Gidley King sent Lieutenant John Bowen, with a party of 49 including 35 convicts, to establish a settlement on the Derwent River
Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia. It grew out of the first settlement on the island at Risdon Cove, eight kilometres up river, which was founded in 1803 and abandoned five months later for the present site of Hobart. Ridson Cove remains today much as it was 190 years ago and is an unique tourist attraction.
There are many fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, including, Salamanca Place which has a terrace of wharehouses dating back to the whaling days of the 1830's. Nearby Battery Point, the original seamens quarters of the city and Maquarie and Davey Street offer more than 60 buildings classified by the National Trust.
Salamanca Place is famous for its historic Georgian warehouses, dating back to the 1830s. Many of these warehouses have been converted into galleries, theatres, cafes, craft shops and restaurants. The market highlights the creative skills of the local craftspeople in a atmosphere that is inspiring, innovative and entertaining.
While strolling through the market take a look at Kelly's Steps. These were built 1839 by the legendary adventurer, sealer, and whaler James Kelly to link Salamanca Place with historic Battery Point

PORT ARTHUR
On the Tasman Peninsula, Port Arthur, was originally a timber station in the early 1800's.
In 1833 it became a prison settlement for male convicts, and quickly established a reputation as being “hell on earth”.
Lovers of fine chocolate will find the Island Produce Tasmania confectionary situated at the base of the Cascade Gardens near the historic Cascade Brewery in South Hobart. The site itself was the location of the Women's Prison or Female Factory
Lowes Rum Distillery built in 1824 is a poignant reminder of the era of convict transportation to Van Diemens Land. The Government of the day purchased the site in 1827 to house the growing numbers of convict women and proceeded to extend the existing buildings. The Cascades Female Factory was officially opened in 1828. It was the female equivalent of Port Arthur, housing female convicts and children and was overcrowded from the first day.
The complex gradually extended to encompass a series of five yards, around which cells, workrooms, storerooms and offices were built. The different yards were used to segregate the different classes of convicts. This prison housed many thousands of women over its life; most were young, poor and single, transported from England after being convicted for variuos crimes. Petty theft was the most common crime; usually the theft was food, clothing or money.
transportation ceased in 1853.In 1879 the site became a contagious diseases hospital. Between 1877 and 1879 those described as "Imperial Lunatics" were housed in one of the yards, the site was also used as a Male Invalid Depot, a Boy's Reformatory and before its closure in 1904, a Women's Lying - in Hospital.
Following the closure of the prison the five yards passed into private hands and over a period of years demolition of the buildings on the site was undertaken.
the women in the prison were considered worse than men because they had fallen below society's expectations of female behavior.
This site is arguably the most significant site for women in Australia.
Hobart’s Theatre Royal is Australia’s oldest theatre established in 1834.
