OFF ROAD EXPLORATION WITH HIRED CARS

Highlights include

The Sichuan-Tibet Highway extends for 2,600 km from Chengdu in Sichuan Province in the east to Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region in the west. It was opened to traffic on December 25, 1954.
The road crosses 14 snow-capped moutains, four rivers, and the largest mud and stone flow area in China. In many places the highway was cut into precipices.

SICHUAN
The lofty and precipitous peaks of northwestern Sichuan are home to 8590 of China's rare giant pandas, which are famed as a national treasure. Four of Sichuan's most famous places - Jiuzhai Gully, the Yellow Dragon Scenic Resort, the Leshan Grand Buddha, and the Sleeping Dragon Hills - have been listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization as World Natural and Cultural Heritage and among the Man and Biosphere Network. The province also has 9 national scenic resorts; Dujiang Weir, Mount Qingcheng, Jianmen Shudao (Sichuan Roads), Mount Gonga, the Sea of Bamboo of Southern Sichuan, Siguniang Mountains (the Four Maidens Mountains), the Xiling Snow-capped Mountains, I I national forests parks, and 50 nature reserves. Sichuan is scenically beautiful -from plateaus, mountain ranges, and canyons to basins, hills, and plains; from rivers and lakes to hot springs and waterfalls; and from volcanic landforms to rosy cloud-shaped hills. The Jinsha, Yalong, Dadu, and Minjiang rivers surge through winding canyons, forming many unusual, mysterious, and unique sights in the nothwest of the province.

Relics of the Old Plank Road
In ancient times, Sichuan and Shaanxi were linked by a plank
road running between Mingyue Gorge to the south and Qingfeng
Gorge to the north of Chaotian Town,
some 25 kilometers north of Guangyuan City and bordering on a
cliff on the eastern bank of Jialing River. The road was first laid at
the dawn of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC) and was renovated
 throughout the successive dynasties.

JIUZHAIGOU NATURE RESERVE
Jiuzhaigou is a huge nature reserve in northern Sichuan, covering approximately 60,000 hectares situated in the Min Shan mountain range. Ancient Chinese legend has it that the goddess Semo accidentally smashed her mirror here and the pieces which fell down the mountain formed beautiful lakes, streams and waterfalls. Despite official attempts to attract thousands of tourists, Jiuzhaigou remains a surprisingly peaceful and traditional place. Yaks, shrines and prayer wheels are all common sights. The small villages here are inhabited by Tibetan and Qiang people who conduct their lives in a very traditional manner. The scenery here is pretty spectacular too. Lakes and waterfalls spill down the mountainside, mountains tower above small hamlets and villages and there is an abundance of beautiful wildlife too. Panda, monkey and bison exist here and birds and fish are everywhere, nestled in amongst the pretty bamboo forest.

WOLONG PANDA RESERVE where scientists have established a successful breeding program for the Giant Panda. Also visit the ancient irrigation system at Dujiangyan built around 256BC, one of the engineering wonders of the world. The world's only and oldest diversion project without a dam. Still in use, it feeds a grid of irrigation canals watering 670,000 hectares of farmland, nurturing China's famous "land of rice and dish" since ancient times.

Qingcheng Mountain, is the birthplace of Taoism. Ascend via cable car and explore the various Taoist temples.

TIBET
The main part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an average elevation of more than 4,000 metres is known as the "Roof of the world" and the "Third pole of the earth." The Mt. Qomolangma (Everest) in the bordering area of China and Nepal is 8,848.13 meters tall and the highest peak in the world.
Tibet has a plateau climate featuring a remarkable change vertically with a big temperature change during the daytime and the night. The North Tibet Plateau is dry and cold. It has a low temperature, a long sunshine time, strong radiation, less rainfall and a low density of air.
Agriculture and Livestork are the economic pillars of Tibet, cultivating sheep, goats and yaks, and growing barley, wheat, potato and rape. Also the region produces famous medicinal plants such as musk, pilose antler and snow lotus.
Tibet uses  hydropower and thermal power and ranks second in solar energy usage in the world.

YUNNAN
Yunnan is a cradle of mankind. The Yuanmou Ape Man lived and multiplied in Yunnan as early as 1.7 million years ago. In ancient time, caravans ran through Yunnan along the Southern Silk Road into Burma and India. Today Yunnan boasts the country's most diverse population of colourful minority peoples and  natural wonders as the Stone Forest, Xishuangbanna, Dali, etc.

Qinghai

Qinghai Province is attractive not only for its beautiful scenery but also for its colourful local customs. It is mainly inhabited by the Tibetans, the Huis, the Mongolians, the Manchus, the Tus, and the Salars, who are diligent, bold and unconstrained, and talented singers and dancers.
In recent years, Qinghai Tourism Administration has opened more routes, including Trekking on the Roof of the World from Xining to Lhasa, the South Silk Road from Xining to Dunhuang, and the Ancient Road from Xining to the Yushu Tibet Autonomous Prefecture, in addition to other special-interest tourist routes, such as the Natural Landscape, the National Park, the Bird Island, and Mountaineering.
